The window?
No. Too high up.
Scream?
Who would give a shit in this neighborhood?
Call the police?
Her cell was dead, and there was no way she could ever find his phone. There was nothing ‘real’ in this shithole of an apartment.
“You told me it was here, Chip.” Kirsten backed away, stepping on things that crackled and crunched, but there was no place to back to. She was against the wall. “You told me you had roommates and that you went to Andover.”
“You didn’t come all the way here to look at a yearbook, Kirsten,” Chip said. “You came because you wanted to.”
She could feel his breath now. And his eyes, burning down the front of her like a laser. His hand reached around and grabbed the left side of her butt.
No time to think. She reared back with her right leg, as far as she could, and let loose a sharp knee to the balls.
“Aaaaaggghhhhhhh!” Chip doubled over in pain.
Kirsten shoved him aside and ran. She could hear him fall into a pile of debris, moaning loudly.
The front door was stuck. No, bolted. Three times.
She twisted and untwisted, the tumblers on the locks clicking wildly before the door suddenly shot open and she nearly fell into the stairwell.
A surprised rodent, or maybe an industrial-grade insect, scurried for cover as Kirsten pounded down the stairs. He would recover. He would come after her. How long did it take guys to recover from something like this? Long enough for her to get a cab?
Fourth floor. Doors opening, frightened eyes peering out from cracks, behind small chains.
Third floor. Second floor. Despite her bad ankle, Kirsten jumped half of the last flight and landed in a heap on the ground level. Scrambling to her feet, she body-slammed the ancient outer door and bolted out onto the street.
Chip’s building was mid-block, and to the left, a gang of seedy-looking guys lurked on the corner, talking loudly into cell phones.
Not there. She turned and ran the other way, without looking, because there was no time for that, and after two steps collided with someone she hadn’t seen.
“Ahhhhhh!” she screamed, and instinctively grabbed his arm, wrenching it hard behind his back. “Leave me alone, you ass-hole!”
“Ow! Kirsten, it’s me. Let go! Please!”
It wasn’t Chip. Not at all.
“Kyle? Oh, my God, Kyle, what are you doing here?” Kristen asked, releasing him from her death grip.
“Well, I, um, actually—,” he stammered.
There was no time. Not here. Not within sight of Chip’s apartment.
Kirsten grabbed his hand. “Come on!”
She ran to the next street, pulling Kyle behind her. There were no cabs there or anywhere. A row of metal-gated shops lined both sides of the deserted street, a boarded-up old theater at the end of the block.
They ran to the theater and ducked into the dark alcove under the old marquee. They weren’t alone, but the other people were fast asleep under ratty blankets against the door.
“Sorry … Kirsten …,” Kyle said, catching his breath. “I didn’t mean to scare you—I was following you, but I lost track….
